Comicology-108 “Walking and Talking”

Comicology-108 “Walking and Talking”

Today’s show was recorded as I walked around the area that I live in at about 2:00AM with a BOSS Micro BR 4 track recorder. (Seen and linked to below.) Which seems to be a rather good little box for doing on the go podcastss. I bought this so that I could do podcasts at places like Denny’s with Shawn, but it seems to work rather well for walking and talking podcasts like this one.

“BOSS MICRO-BR Roland Digital Recorder” (BOSS)

If you want to see how big this device is this picture might help you out. From left to right we have 1. a iPod Nano, a Motorola Razor phone, a iPod Video, the BOSS Micro BR

BOSS size

If you get a chance please tell me what you think of this show any sort of comment would be good. Tell me about the sound quality, or the content. Tell me if you liked it or hated it.

I start of by talking about the myth of John Henry.

After that I talk about digital distro of music.

Then I launch into talking about how the two things pertain to digital distro of comic books.

In short: I don’t think that digital distro of comic book will make comic book shops like John Henry, or small local CD shops that were killed off by technology. I think it will impact the amount of sales that local shops make, but in the end because comics are a collectors market I think the comic book shops will survive.

Take care!

Hey Neil, I just finished listening to Comicology 108 which was recorded on your new device. Anyway you can increase the volume on that thing? I had to crank my speakers way up to hear it properly.

I’m quite worried for small comic book shops. If the big companies like Marvel and DC get their act together and start selling non-DRM digital comics it will be very bad news for small comic book shops. At this point there is nothing to stop comic producers from providing their monthlies digitally as they are already available, illegally?, on-line.

The future that I envision is one in which I can download my comics digitally on a weekly basis. If I want a hard copy of the books I would wait until the trade is released. Even better comic book companies could provide print-on-demand services for their catalogs. This way if I wanted to create my own trade or essentials I could. For instance I read Checkmate but not the Outsiders. I could create my own CheckOut trade paperback with print-on-demand.

With the entire back catalog of comics available on line with print-on-demand that would effectively kill the collectible market. Small comic book shops would have to diversify (CCG, posters, t-shirts) even more than they already have to stay alive.

Yeah, the volume is way down on this one.

Anyway, how bout digital comics be made as TPB so brick and mortar has nothing to worry about individual issues.

    Simon:

I love your print on demand idea. For real that has got to be one of the best things I have ever heard.

    Bastich:

The volume issue is due two things.

    1. I am not good at using the device yet and the settings were off. I have played with some new settings and I know that future shows will sound louder.

    2. I’m a “loud talker” and when I was walking around the area I live in at about 2:00AM I was making a effort to keep my own “loud talker” voice down. This can be fixed by either talking at my normal level, or by not doing shows outside in the wee morning. I think that I will do both.
